The Urban Forestry Division, Chennai Circle, of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department is conducting a tree census in Chennai to document the number of trees in the city for better management and future planning.
The tree census project has been named #trees 2011 (prounounced 'hash' trees) and is to be completed over a span of six months, with the help of volunteers from schools, colleges, corporate entities and more.
The data collected will include species, height and girth of the trees, stress factors affecting the tree and also potential locations for planting of trees in the future.
