Tree Census for Greater Chennai will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will concentrate on
trees occurring in institutional campuses such as academic institutions, government premises and cor-
porate offices. The second phase covers the tree population in various wards on roadsides, public
parks and private gardens.The whole exercise involves volunteers from Colleges, Schools, NGOs,
Corporate sector and other interested individuals.
The Tree Census will be coordinated by Urban Forestry Division of Tamil Nadu Forest Department
and Centre for Floristic Research, Madras Christian College, Tambaram. Chennai Metropolitan Devel-
opment Authority (CMDA), Corporation of Chennai and College teachers will coordinate the entire
activity. The volunteers participating in the census along with their respective staff coordinators will
be offered an orientation to execute the tree census. Each volunteer group will be provided with
census survey forms and the completed forms with a summary of the report for each
institution/ward will be compiled by the Urban Forestry Department towards developing a database.
